Who the laptop quiz is for

Anyone choosing a laptop who’d rather not read spec sheets. The quiz asks about how you’ll use it, then explains each pick in plain words.

Five things to look for in a laptop

The right laptop depends on what you’ll do with it and how much you want to spend, which is what the quiz asks. These five rules cover most people.

Get a personal answer
  1. 1 Get at least 8 GB of memory With 4 GB, a laptop slows down with a few tabs open. 16 GB is comfortable for years.
  2. 2 Avoid 64 GB storage unless it’s a Chromebook 64 GB fills up fast on Windows. Look for 256 GB or more, ideally an SSD.
  3. 3 Pick the system you already know Windows runs almost anything. A Mac suits iPhone owners. A Chromebook is cheap and simple if you live in the browser.
  4. 4 Weight matters if you carry it Under 1.4 kg is easy to carry every day. Over 2 kg and it will mostly stay on a desk.
  5. 5 Check how long it gets updates Every Chromebook has an end date for updates. Older Windows laptops may not run Windows 11.

Frequently asked questions

Is the laptop quiz free?

Yes. There’s no sign-up and we don’t ask for your email. Your answers stay in the page address, so you can share or bookmark your results.

How do you choose the laptops?

We start from what people in the UK actually buy, plus current models from each major brand: 210+ laptops available right now. The quiz scores every one against your answers. When two laptops fit equally well, the more popular one comes first.

Why don’t you show prices?

Prices change often, sometimes several times a day, so a price on this page would soon be out of date. The “Check price on Amazon” button always shows you the current one.

What is a renewed laptop?

A used laptop that has been checked, repaired where needed and cleaned, then sold with a guarantee. It costs less than new, but it’s often a few years old and the battery may hold less charge.

Do brands pay to be recommended?

No. We earn a small commission when you buy through our links, at no extra cost to you. Brands can’t pay to appear in the quiz, and the commission doesn’t change which laptops it picks.

Windows, Mac or Chromebook: which should I get?

Windows if you need specific programs or want to game. A Mac if you own an iPhone and want long battery life. A Chromebook if you mostly use the web and want something cheap and simple. If you’re not sure, choose “Not sure” in the quiz and we’ll pick for you.
